Monticello Visitors Center and Administrative Campus
Charlottesville, Virginia

Photo01In an effort to reduce the 20th century intrusions to the Monticello mountaintop, the Thomas Jefferson Foundation is planning a new Visitors Center and Administrative Campus. The Visitors Center, to be located in the vicinity of the current ticket office/shuttle stop, will be approximately 40,000 square feet, and will include exhibits, a history center and an auditorium. A new Administrative Campus, approximately 30,000 square feet, will be located on a nearby piece of property and will allow the current staff offices to be removed from the mountaintop.

As a subconsultant to Ayers Saint Gross Architects, RK&K is providing civil/site engineering design for both the Visitors Center and the Administrative Campus. With this work, RK&K has been required to develop parking and bus routing layouts, site grading and traffic studies. Stormwater management is being designed to provide bioengineering solutions that result in minimal impacts to the existing mountainside. Entrance improvements are being coordinated with VDOT and County planning officials. RK&K is also providing design improvements to the existing water and sewer utilities on the mountain.
