Georgetown Branch Transitway / Trail
Montgomery County, Maryland

As a part of a joint venture, RK&K is providing environmental and preliminary engineering design services for the Purple Line Georgetown Branch Transitway/Trail (GBTT). The project consists of a 4.4 mile light rail line and hiker/biker trail between Bethesda and Silver Spring in southern Montgomery County, including 1.1 miles along CSXT Metropolitan Branch main line and 3.3 miles of Georgetown Branch right-of-way owned by Montgomery County, Maryland. The corridor provides an opportunity to provide improved access between the central business districts of Silver Spring and Bethesda and create enhanced regional access.
RK&K’s responsibilities include preliminary civil, utility, structural and geotechnical engineering; establishing limits of disturbance/grading; replacement of the Rock Creek Bridge; terminal station designs and design coordination with agencies; five new station stops; at-grade/grade separation studies; storage yard layout; retaining walls; bridge modifications; drainage revisions/culvert extensions; utility relocations; and analysis of traffic and safety at grade crossings and along the light rail alignment.
