US 64 over the Scuppernong River and attached Pedestrian Bridge
Tyrrell County, North Carolina

Photo01RK&K provided an alternative study, preliminary design and final design for a 480-meter, 16-span, prestressed concrete girder bridge over the Scuppernong River. This bridge contained a curve-tangent-curve alignment and was sub-divided into four three-span continuous units and two two-span continuous units. The bridge is an on-site replacement/widening necessitating the use of staged construction to maintain traffic. In addition, this site involved the design of a 100-meter long pedestrian bridge connecting the US 64 Bridge to Veterans Memorial Park. This bridge was required to be compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) 1990. This 2.286 meter wide pedestrian bridge will tie to the sidewalk, located along the north side of the US 64 Bridge, and descends 6.2 meters onto the adjacent island through the use of a series of ramps and landings. The pedestrian bridge was required to be located in a manner that minimizes environmental impacts to the park and avoids removal of the existing trees. An alternative study was prepared and presented to NCDOT for their review and selection.
